I want a free copy of my credit report, but where do I find it? Many people are asking for this today in order to help them review it thoroughly before taking out a loan or mortgage.

Very simply, if you are about to do this, you will need to be sure your credit score is accurate, and obviously for this, you need to be sure the transactions you’ve made in the past year have been listed correctly. This is a necessary part of the process, and shouldn’t take long.

When you get the credit report, it will contain 5 different sections, some more important than the others. Obviously, your personal information is included, and assuming you know all this, you can just scan through this and make sure everything is accurate.

The public records will include any judgments in court you may have received, as well as filing for bankruptcy if that indeed occurred. Again, if neither of these apply to you, you can just glance at them and be sure there are no errors listed here that might affect your credit score in a negative way.

Probably the most important part you should be looking at is your open accounts, such as any leases, credit cards, or other payment vehicles you have out. This is essentially a listing of your past transactions over the course of the year, and be sure to analyze this thoroughly.

Even defaulting on a smaller payment can negatively affect your credit report significantly, so be sure you’ve reviewed this thoroughly. Keep in mind, as I’ve explained before, a free copy of your credit report unfortunately won’t contain your credit score, but the financial institution you are working with can easily obtain this.
